Huey Long — Governor of Louisiana

Cliff Hutchinson was back in the saddle as Toastmaster on August 30th with the theme - "Every Man a King" with Huey P. Long as the inspiration. Cliff referred to Mr. Long as an "icon of public speaking" and a "classic stump speaker". I recall Cliff's last theme was "Nattering Nabobs" inspired by Spiro T. Agnew (Nov 9th 2006) almost 11 months ago.

There were fireworks at the business meeting arising from Cliff's motion that had been tabled earlier regarding the athletic committee. Luckily John Sessions moved to table the motion indefinitely to consider Kumar's application for membership.

Shortly thereafter Big D! welcomed Kumar Parthasarthy as its newest member! Hut had his day in the sun leading table topics calling Angelo, Pete, Renita, John Lawson, Kumar (who was barely a member) and Dee up. It is always exhilarating to have more table topics and you could tell everyone loved it.

Prepared speeches were given by Qibin on reforming the health care system - "A daunting task", David Medart on his life experiences in "Scratching Beneath the Surface" in his icebreaker, Paul Carter on his luck with dentists in his lighthearted speech "Upside Down," and Ben Vincent on "Setting the Stage for Success - Meeting Roles and Responsibilities".

Kathy was the General Evaluator and individual evaluators were Eric, Mike, Renita and Angelo. Awards went to Dee for best table topics, Ben for best speaker, Renita for best evaluator, and John Sessions for Toastmaster of the evening.

We had guests at the meeting - John Ahearn, returning guest Rick and Area Governor Ed Meissner. The club received its planning sheet towards the DCP plan for the year from Angelo. The meeting ended on time at 8:30pm.

Snippets from the meeting:
John Sessions had a field day as Grammarian as you can see below.
He chose two words for word of the day - Egoism and Vainglorious.

Attributed to John:
"It is a pleasure to serve in your administration Congressman Hutchinson."
"How many French men does it take to defend Paris? We don't know. They've never tried it"
John then proceeded to comment on Renita reference to Paul's caliber as a speaker by narrating the story of the circus owner whose human canon ball was leaving. He said "I am very sorry you are leaving. Where am I going to find a man of your caliber."
Cliff enthralled us when he said "Many French politicians meet an abrupt end..."
