Angelo Pereira has just filed the following report on this past Thursday's special evening:

The meeting was special as it was for the Big D Evaluation and International Speech Contest. Adam Brewster opened the session and led in reciting the pledge.

Two new members were welcomed — Therese Rockwell, returning after a hiatus, and Ping Gui who has been visiting with us, it seems, forever! Welcome to both. It is a good thing when you have an Ice Breaker or two each month. It means that something is going right.

Contest Master for the evening, Danni Babik, introduced the two contests we were to have and Chief Judge and Southern Division Governor, Andrea Briden, advised us of the rules. Our featured speaker for the evening was Allison Reiff-Martin. Her speech was titled, "And Now for my Princess, a Pedicure" which was inspired by an article in the New York Times. Evaluations were given by Tony Brucks Jr., Elizabeth Cook, Ryan McCollum and Neetu Agarwal.

After a short break, the International Speech Contest featured some inspiring speeches given by Benjamin Vincent, Jim Wolff, and John Sessions. Our Area Governor Debbie Allen was present and she announced the dates for the area contest and encouraged volunteers from Big D to assist as featured speakers at contests at other clubs as well as at the area contest. The Area Contest will be held on March 2nd at the Spring Creek Barbecue off of Hwy. 75.

First place in the evaluation contest went to Neetu Agarwal who will represent us at the Area 31 contest. Elizabeth Cook came in a very commendable second, considering this was her first evaluation! And, John Sessions won the International Speech Contest at the Club level while Jim Wolff (insert howl here ...) took second place. All winners were presented with trophies.

As we closed out a great evening, we recognized all those who made this night a great success; Adam Brewster who was the Contest Chair, Contest Master Danni Babik, and Katherine Gean who stepped up as Sergeant at Arms. Also Ben and Angelo who kept the time and of course, the chief judge and other judges. Adam designed some really creative certificates designed especially for the occasion.

And a good time was had by all ...
